Glasses Wearers Are More Intelligent – It’s Official!
Glasses have always been associated with intelligence in popular culture and general public perception, probably by virtue of the fact that people who wear glasses are somehow deemed more studious, hard-working or well-read than people that don’t. And while this perception has sometimes resulted in the ridicule or even torment of glasses wearers, it is they that ultimately have the last laugh – because they’re officially cleverer!
Glasses wearers are more intelligent
In a recent study, scientists discovered that rather than being nerdy, introverted bookworms, short-sighted glasses wearers are actually more open-minded and can generally boast a higher intellect than people who don’t wear glasses. The study, which was undertaken at the University of Melbourne's Centre for Eye Research in Australia, tried to identify key personality traits linked to short-sightedness. In the study, over 600 twins and a comparative group of 278 members of families with a history of myopia were asked to answer detailed questionnaires on their personality and lifestyle.
Glasses – busting the myth
Each of the volunteers in the study was assessed in accordance to the same criteria, with the key evaluation characteristics being: extroversion, openness, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and neuroticism. The findings of the research clearly demonstrated that there was no apparent link between short-sightedness and introversion, passiveness and conscientiousness – dispelling completely the various mythical notions that have publicly defined glasses wearers for decades. Instead, glasses wearers were revealed to possess strong personality characteristics associated with agreeableness and openness.
Glasses wearers are well rounded people
According to the scientists who conducted the study, agreeableness in particular correlates with intelligence, and high scores on this trait indicate that a person is well-educated and has a lot of interests, making glasses wearers some of the most amenable, interesting and generally well-rounded individuals in modern society. The full study was published in the journal Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science.
Glasses have literally transformed how we see the world, and developments in science and technology means that glasses have taken one more step into the future. A team of Japanese scientists have used artificial intelligence to transform the humble glasses into mini machines that mean we'll never be victims of absent-mindedness again. It's a concept that hasn't been lost on many headline writers – 'The glasses that can find anything (except, of course your missing glasses)' was how the Times newspaper put it. Glasses, alongside car keys, are perhaps the most common thing we tend to mislay. The intelligent glasses are part of a project that has been codenamed Smart Goggle. The glasses work by recording everything your eye sees. You tell the glasses what it is you're searching for, for example the TV remote control, and the glasses play back a video to your eye of the last few seconds you saw the TV remote control.
Glasses: Looking to the Future
The glasses could save us from the frustration of 'senior moments' where we seem to lose our glasses, keys and wallets. The glasses that use artificial intelligence were invented by Yasuo Kuniyoshi. The tiny camera built onto the glasses helps identify what the camera scans, although the glasses are not perfect – there are some items where the computer can only do a 'best guess' of what the object is. The team of Japanese scientists created what is being considered as the most advanced object recognition software in the world. Users can wear the glasses, tell the computer the name of what they are seeing, and the computer will remember this information for future reference. Professor Kuniyoshi said his glasses bridged the real world and the cyber world. It's hoped that the glasses will eventually store vast amounts of information, from the internet for example.
Glasses Transform How we See the World
Using such advanced glasses, the glasses could in theory know more than the wearer of the glasses by drawing on vast databases of information. The glasses could for instance, identify makes of vehicles or know the technical specifications of electronic gadgets. The glasses could in theory tell the wearer the species of flower they are looking at, or the name of a tree species. Of course, it's early days for the futuristic glasses, but it's hoped the now bulky design could in the future look just like a normal pair of glasses.
